ADR - American Depository Receipt
security issued in the USA to represent shares of a foreign stock.
Why?
To allow foreign stocks to be traded in the US, on the NYSE, for example
Expand the pool of potential investors for foreign companies (US investors easier to invest)
Who?
There are approximately 700 companies with ADRs
Types
company sponsored - listed on an exchange
non sponsored - held by investment bank
Both types are available to individual investors, but only sponsored ones have daily quoted prices available to the public (on the web, and in print)
