BBC

British Broadcasting Corporation

For most of recent history, British TV market was dominated by BBC.

Highly respected for quality and broad coverage

BBC was government-run and financed

89.50 pounds per TV viewer in licensing fees (whether they watched BBC or not)

In 1996, that licensing fee (BBC's "revenue") came to 1.8 billion pounds per year

In return, BBC serves a public mission of informing and elevating the British public (and entertaining them)

Must comply with government standards for content and distribution

Staff of 1000's of writers, editors, producers, etc.

British see BBC as part of national heritage, culture.

Competitors

In recent years, the monopoly of BBC has been challenged by companies such as BSkyB a stellite tv provider from Rupert Murdoch of Australia (also the owner of Fox)
