Greece & Olympics (cause of crisis 2010?)
"Even though the Olympic tradition began in Greece in antiquity and the first modern Olympics were held in Greece in 1896, Greece was denied the right to host the centenary modern Olympics in 1996 owing to the country's lack of preparedness in organization and infrastructure. Greece did host the 2004 Olympics, but the financial strain that the games put on Greece contributed to the country's economic fragility in the run-up to the current debt crisis"

Euro Cup 2012 (Soccer)
Poland & Ukraine
..."following in the footsteps of the 2010 soccer World Cup in South Africa and the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. The 16-nation UEFA Euro 2012 is about to be staged in two neighbors of the former Soviet bloc, held for the first time by nations that during the Cold War were beyond what the West called the Iron Curtain
..."When their bid was selected in 2007, neither of these countries could have foreseen the global economic recession. Yet their contract with UEFA, European soccer’s governing body, locked them into expensive new stadiums, roads, railroad improvements, airports and hotels....The eight Euro stadiums alone cost about $3 billion. Ukraine now has new high-speed trains, but its bill for Euro 2012 has escalated beyond $13 billion, half of it financed by the state."
..."More than $100 million of European Union funding for road construction and environmental upgrading underpinned Poland’s application to share the hosting rights to Euro 2012."

From Culture to Development?
Many of the traditional academic courses offered by Summit Study Abroad fit into the following framework: Business - Culture --> Innovation - Entrepreneurship --> Economic Development .
Note: Business (might include international marketing, finance or other business courses), Culture (might include language, cross cultural communication, or other "cultural" courses), Innovation & Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development (Policy, Issues, etc).
Why did we choose these themes? For one reason, because we are optimists, and we believe in the potential of combining business with "culture" to spur innovation, to encourage entrepreneurship, and to lead to economic growth (jobs and prosperity).
From an academic standpoint, we are curious about whether countries can use "culture" to promote economic development. With the American and the majority of European countries facing economic crisis, there has never been as much interest as there is now for finding economic models to produce economic growth (and jobs, prosperity, etc). Governments around the world are looking to boost innovation and entrepreneurship as a means to promote growth. But the question remains: "how exactly to you create an environment in which innovation will occur?".
What can be done to promote entrepreneurship? As governments around the globe seek answers to this question, we here at Summit Global Education have dedicated ourselves to contributing brainpower to this global debate. We are hopeful that by connecting "culture" to business, we may find the secrets of creating this environment in which innovation and entrepreneurship may flourish.
We hope to use our efforts of students and professors to seek ways in which business may be used in connection with culture to promote economic growth. We travel the world looking for special places that are experimenting and have shown success using "culture" to promote economic growth.
Our courses offered through our study abroad programs will fit into this model. Our professors and partners, our blog and our website, will all support this educational journey. We hope you will join us...
