Denmark

Table of Contents:

Intro:

Denmark is located in northern Europe bordering Germany, Sweden and Norway. The Kingdom of Denmark also includes the overseas territories of Greenland and the Faroe Islands.

Denmark's leading position in Northern Europe is based on close economic, political and cultural ties to the bordering countries in Scandinavia as well as the Baltic region.

The Danish infrastructure is constantly being improved: hubs such as Copenhagen Airport, Billund Airport and the Port of Aarhus are being further developed over the next few years, as well as The Oresund Link, a new bridge linking Sweden to Denmark.

Copenhagen is enjoying a particular renaissance in the new economy thanks to its high quality communications and excellent workforce.

Companies who have made the location choice using Denmark as a base/headquarter for the Northern Europe include Alcatel Space Industries, Hewlett-Packard, IBM e-business, Lucent Technologies, NCR Corporation, Oracle, DHL Worldwide Express, Sony, Ferring Pharmaceuticals and Yamanouchi.

Denmark is an excellent location for Shared Service Centers, e-business centers, distribution centers and regional headquarters.

South Jutland

South Jutland often referred to as North Schleswig is just north of the border between Denmark and Germany. Road transport covers the major part of the distribution network - transport times to the capital Copenhagen is around 3 hours and Hamburg is only 2 hours away. South Jutland has one international and two domestic airports which means minimum travel time for personnel.

The companies in South Jutland cover the following business fields: mechanics, plastics, electronics, food, transport and paper and graphic products.

Triangle Region

The Triangle Region is located in Denmark at the center of the Danish motorway and railway networks, at the point where all the major north-south and east-west road and rail routes meet. Adjacent to the Triangle Region is Billund Airport, the second largest Danish international airport.

Industries strongly represented in the Triangle Region include food technology, food and beverage processing and companies working with biotechnology and genetic engineering.

Corporates located in the area include ABB, GKN Wheels, NKT Cable and Tetra/Laval.

The Triangle Region houses many schools and colleges focusing on vocational training, supplementary courses and skills updating

Aalborg

Aalborg is a city located in North Jutland in Denmark. The city has strengths in the electronics and telecommunications sectors, iron and steel and foodstuffs.

The University of Aalborg is a major asset in the local economy, working closely with companies established in the city. A number of trade schools are another valuable element in providing a skilled work force. Each year, about 10,000 people are trained in the trade schools across a number of disciplines. Research from the university is particularly focused in the electronics field and feeds into activities on the North Jutland Science Park.

Esbjerg

The county and the municipalities in Business Development Center West - EU Vest - are all located on the west coast of Jutland in Denmark. The port of Esbjerg serves as a regional focal point, and with a new motorway ensuring short and fast connections, the region is a natural gateway to the EU.

The region has experienced the highest growth increase in Denmark since 1980. Agriculture and fishing are the dominant industries, and a great deal of food processing companies are located in the area. The timber, furniture and plastic industries are other vital business activities, and the off-shore oil and gas activities are currently experiencing strong growth.

There is close interaction between the city's educational institutions and the business life of the region. Knowledge, research, training and education are a major priority in the region itself.

Funen

Denmark is the bridge between Continental Europe and Scandinavia. With fixed links to both Jutland and Zealand, Funen is the point which connects Denmark to continental Europe and Scandinavia. Direct access to Denmark’s main rail network is available through links via Funen. Travel times to the capital city Copenhagen are an hour by train. The same applies to the motorway network, Funen’s roads provide direct access to the European motorway network, both to the north and the south. Odense is the largest city in Funen.

The food industry is very important in Funen, characterized by primary production within agriculture and horticulture and a food processing industry. More than half of the Danish horticultural trade is concentrated in Funen, which is given the label of “the garden of Denmark.”

The region has a growing energy and environment sector, ranging from energy production, production of machinery for use in energy production, wastewater treatment and waste handling and recycling activities.

The health sector is also given high priority in Funen. This sector covers patient treatment at the island’s hospitals, research and education at the region’s university, the production of intensive care equipment, medicines and electronic and orthopaedic equipment. One of Denmark’s three university hospitals is located in Odense, making the region an important center for medicine and health.

Odense University, Odense Engineering College and Funen Science Park are situated in close proximity to each other, forming a strong center of knowledge, closely linked to Funen's industry

Viborg

The Viborg region is located in the North-western corner of Jutland in Denmark in Northern Europe. In terms of land area, it is the fourth largest county in the country. Karup Airport has daily departures to Copenhagen and international destinations. On a smaller scale, Skive Airport handles international business flights, as well as domestic business and private flights.

The major sectors in Viborg are agriculture/fisheries and manufacturing industries.

The global pump company Grundfos, is the largest company in the County and this means that the engineering sector accounts for 6% of the working population.

The employers in the county have easy access to universities and research centers, such as the University of Aalborg, NOVI Science Park, the University of Aarhus and Science Park Aarhus.

Farming is a major sector in the county and is supported by leading edge research. The Danish Institute of Agricultural Science (DIAS) employs 650 people at its research center in Viborg. More recently, the Research Center Foulum has been established with modern glasshouses, laboratories and livestock facilities.

Aarhus

Located in Western Denmark, Aarhus offers a central location for the Danish market and easy access to the Scandinavian market through ferry connections to mainland Norway and Sweden.

One of the fastest growing regions in Denmark, Aarhus is seen as a premier center for high-tech activities, with a large number of companies in the fields of IT and food technology. The bio and biomedical technology cluster is also particularly active with a number of companies specializing in niche areas.

Companies who have established R&D operations in the area include Tele Danmark, Terma Electronics, Hewlett-Packard, Microsoft, ICL and Bang & Olufsen.

Researchers at the University of Aarhus and the Aarhus Business School work closely with local businesses and manage to achieve a high level of technology transfer. The incubators, Science Park Aarhus Ltd, Aarhus Business Incubation Center, IT Park Aarhus and the Alexandra Institute Ltd are all examples of collaboration between researchers and established business.

Copenhagen

Denmark’s capital, Copenhagen, has an excellent geographic location as the logistics and distribution gateway between North and Central Europe and the Baltic Region. Copenhagen offers a highly developed infrastructure with Europe's most efficient (and northern Europe's largest) airport and an efficient port with free port status.

Key sectors being promoted are biotechnology, environmental technology and medical research. The region is home to most of the major international and Danish companies and research institutions, as well as Europe's largest technical university.

Medicon Valley, which incorporates the region including Copenhagen in Denmark and Skåne in Sweden, is the largest pharmaceutical and biotechnological growth center in Scandinavia and one of the strongest in Europe, featuring a fertile cross-border partnership between industry, investors and academia.

Some of the well-known companies and organizations in Copenhagen include Olicom, Nokia, Computer Associates, Oracle, Delta, IBM and NCR.

The quality and breadth of research institutions are some of the reasons why many international software, gene technology, pharmaceutical and medical companies have chosen to test their products in Denmark. Denmark was the first country to introduce biotechnology legislation, giving many companies a head start on the international competition as a result of focused public and private research and cooperation.
