Travel industry business models
For more information about the hospitality industry strategy, I would recommend you to free download "Hospitality 2010" report by Deloitte that covers 4 key Hospitality industry trends. (Brand, Emerging Markets, Human Assets, Technology) :
one of the key goals of our website is to highlight innovation, and to help entrepreneurs and investors to identify key trends that are occurring in key industries. In the travel sector, there are some incredibly imaginative business models developing. In this section we will try to highlight a few of them, and help our readers to identify some of these trends so that they might better decide which companies to invest in, and which ones to start up themselves....please contribute to this wiki if you feel inspired....
the "travel industry" includes such wide variety as Cruise ships and ski vacations, and beach holidays, solo backpacking, and family trips to Disneyland. In this section, we look at the various segments of the travel industry.
Here at Kooky Plan, we love to track trends, and help our readers to identify industry trends that can effect business. If you are also a trend spotter, please feel free to contribute here...
As travel has gone online, the search engines that specialize in finding cheap tickets, or hotels, or vacation packages have become ever more important. In this section we will examine the economics and competition of the travel search engine market.
Yes, believe it or not, the Airports themselves are a business model, and one worth discussing. Who builds them? Who profits from them? How do cities raise money to get them built, and how runs them afterwards? These discussion and more should be included in our "airports" page....enjoy :-)
There is really not much more fun than hopping on a cruise ship and spending a week in Alaska or the Caribbean, but what is the business model of these traveling resorts? In this section we will take a look at the Cruise Ship Industry, and we will analyze the business of various ships such as the Cruise Ship NCL Jewel.
The ski industry includes ski manufacturers, snowboard makers such as Burton, as well as mountain operators, hotels, and so on. If you love to ski as much as I do, you will understand why this section just had to be included in Kooky Plan :-)
The hotel industry is vitally important to the economy, as is the travel industry as a whole. It is a tricky industry that involves aspects of real estate management, services, and location marketing.
while it might be tough to be a traditional travel agent these days, there still are many people that prefer working with a "real person" as opposed to arranging their travel though a computer. Plus, travel agents can help you plan an itinerary, and can advise you on where you "should go", and not just the cheapest flight to get there. Also, the main sites that most people use, such as Travelocity are actually just online travel agents, in that they still need access to computer reservation systems for booking (see discussion below).
These are the massive computer systems that are behind the scenes. They are the interface between travel agents (Travelocity, etc) and the airlines that are selling tickets. So, when your travel agent goes into the "system" to find tickets, this is where they are going. It is a very competitive business.
The travel guide book industry actually now includes many internet based delivery mechanisms for sending out travel information and telling you were you should go. While Lonely Planet might be the undisputed king of travel advice, they face stiff competition in the new web-enabled world.
The business travel sector is one of the few areas that is still very profitable for travel agents. It is a huge and growing industry.
Here is a list of all of our favorite sites. Take a look and feel free to add to this list...

Travel Zoo
TravelZoo is a website you'll want to check out! You can sign up (free) for their weekly "Top 20 Best Travel Deals" email. They basically cruise all the travel websites out there and consolidate all the best deals on their own website. They don't provide the travel themselves, but rather link you back to the original provider.
I did book a trip to Budapest based on one of their tantalizing "Top 20" lists and it worked out great. $499 per person included airfare, hotel, and breakfast for 5 nights! Honestly, I recommend this site to anyone interested in travel!

I look forward to my once-a-week email so I can daydream about all the cool places I might possibly go some day!
