what is a blog?

Blogs as a business?

Estimated value:  $1 million:  The site has had published submissions from 2,300 authors, many of which maintain their own blogs as well. 73,000 articles have been published in the six years since launching. The site draws about 1 million unique monthly visitors who generate 3-4 million page views.

What is a blog worth?

A german version of "tech crunch" sold itself on ebay.  expected sale price 20,000 and 100,000 euros.  Traffic?  last month the site reportedly received 85,000 unique visitors and served 254,000 page views. The total number for 2008 was just under 2.5 million unique visitors and 3.6 million page impressions. The embedded graph shows the site’s growth since it took off in 2005 (it was actually started back in 2003 but had been on hiatus for a while).

Online Advertising

Basic business model for blogs:  sell advertising, hopefully not just google ads..but specialized ads for your industry.  Sell ads, and attract an audience by advertising.   Model = make more money with ads on your site, than you spend advertising your site.

Blog networks:

Used to pay bloggers $5 per article, but that is changing with VC money entering the picture...

Wikinvest has done something interesting with adding a blog network...see here:  wikinvest

Blog networks raise VC money:

GigaOm, one of the first blog networks to raise money, has joined b5Media, Silicon Alley Insider, VentureBeat and Paid Content (acquired), among others, in raising capital. Holdout ReadWriteWeb is said to be testing the waters and looking for a round of funding as well.

Interacting with Readers:

Redanyway is a young startup out of India that aims to provide an alternate way to manage your ‘centralized me’ where your personal website or blog is your profile page outside of any walled gardens. The founders dubbed the application a ‘distributed social network’, but I look at it more like MyBlogLog on steroids, since it’s basically a way to get to know and interact more with your readers.
