Where to find global jobs:  The global job search

http://www.jobsabroad.com/

Top jobs for global execs:

www.ivyexec.com/

Ivy Exec, a highly selective pre-screened career site for over 50,000 elite professionals globally. Designed for top performers, Ivy Exec has become a trusted recruiting tool used by organization such as Goldman Sachs, World Bank, McKinsey, Google, GE, and other top firms looking to hire high-caliber professionals. Ivy Exec’s university partners include programs at Harvard, Columbia, Duke, Cornell, and Berkeley, just to name a few.

Resume CV tips:

#1 Make a great resume.  See our guide here:   resume .  Take a careful look at the "action verbs" section, and try to use as many of them as possible.  It will force you to speak more forcefully about what you accomplished.  Note: you should never use a passive voice in your resume!

Table of Contents:

How to use LINKEDIN for job searching:

#2.  Build up your online resume & online reputation!  -  This includes blogging, twittering and of course... LINKEDIN - what you should first do is:  copy & paste your resume into LinkedIn.com .  You need to add your full resume on LinkedIn.  Add your photo (in tie, professional).  Then, join "groups" such as :

Find groups that directly relate to your career.

Join these groups... and then POST a message in them saying that you are looking for a job... be very specific, and tell them what you are looking for.  Note: recruiters use these sites to find talent.  You should join any and all about LOGISTICS, supply chain, Brazil, etc.  Once you join all the groups possible, then remove yourself from some, and join others.  The purpose is just to leave a message, join a conversation, ask for help, and see who reaches out to help you...

Then... go to "ANSWERS" section in Linkedin.... search for "logistics" or "logistics brazil" or "brazil supply chain", etc... and you will find a list of questions that people are asking.  ANSWER Questions!  But, be very careful and answer very well.  These questions are being read & ORIGINATED by recruiters.  They watch to see who is writing well...and then contact them with job offers!!    Note:  you establish yourself as an expert in that field by answering questions.

Build your Linkedin network!!!  note:  do NOT just connect with "friends" you already know!   Instead... connect with anyone that might be able to help you find a job!!  if a stranger asks you to connect... say YES! (you can always delete them later after you have a job, althouth this is really bad ettiquite!).  When you ask and answer questions...look for names of people that are intelligent-seeming online in those Q/A sessions, and ask them to connect, and ask them for help finding a job.  The chances are that they will help you.  Look for people who are in the GROUPS that you joined, and Ask them to connect as well.

Note - the bigger your 1st tier group network is...the more chance that a RECRUITER will find you.

Recruiters and Linkedin:  this is very interesting.... did you know that LinkedIn is extremely profitable (when other networks like facebook are not)?  Do you know why?  Its because of the recruiters... who pay a small fortune to have access to be able to "dig-deep" into the network. Look at how Linkedin works... if you are friends with someone...you can see their friends, but not the friends of friends.  And, you must be friends with someone to see their detailed resume.  Recruiters pay Linkedin to be able to extend their "vision".  Note:  its all of the professional recruiters that PAY for this service that makes Linkedin profitable...

But, the key to getting FOUND by recruiters is to make yourself easier to be found!  this means #1 getting a good resume on Linkedin , #2 joining groups, and joining conversations.. and GIVING comments to the community...

Jobfox expanding, raises $20M

Jobfox, the “personal branding” site for job seekers that allows them to market themselves to potential employers, says it is doubling its sales staff in response to strong demand.

Based in McLean, Virginia, the company also has sales offices in four major cities, and will be expanding to six more. It is also entering into a deal with Australian jobs site MyCareer.

We’ve previously written about the strategies of Jobfox and a competitor called Trovix. A third company, Jobster, recently showed signs of weakness, replacing its co-founder and CEO with a more experienced exec.  Draper Fisher Jurvetson led the $20 million round, with Menlo Ventures and New Enterprise Associates also participating.

Resumes

Resume Building:

1.  Education: get a masters degree, doctorate degree PhD, MBA,etc...

2.  Certification:

  • for careers in finance, there is a CFA charter, which might be more valuable than an MBA for advancing your career.  See article from the Economist here
  • In Hedge Funds, there is an innovative attempt to make a new "Chartered Hedge Fund Associate" (CHA) designation ....see discussion here  .   This one was launched as a LinkedIn group (HFG) that attracted some 15,000 members...then they decided to launch a certification program...not sure if it will succeed, but its a good attempt.

Interview questions

The hardest part of an interview is sitting through the series of strange, tough and interesting interview questions. To help you with this process, there is an interesting website: take a look

Salary info

www.salary.com

www.payscale.com

You should visit these sites to get an understanding about how much money you could / should be making based on your level of employment, type of job, location, etc. It is well worth a visit to these sites before going on any job-hunting, or any interview.

Notice to Bankers

If you want to be compensated like a banker, then stay in banking. Every week, I talk to candidates who want to move from banking to private equity or venture capital and then tell me that they need the compensation to match what they make in their banking role. There’s a tongue-in-cheek recruiter’s joke about why the investment banks pay more – it’s to make you forget that you don’t like the work, or the people or not having A LIFE – and it works, until you remember, and that’s just about bonus time so they give you more money to help you forget! Seriously, banks have historically paid more than principal investment firms and, although that gap has narrowed at the very large PE shops in recent years, it remains true for the overall industry. Private equity and venture capital firms have different business models, different job responsibilities and usually more attractive work cultures. If you’re focused more on maximizing immediate cash comp, keep doing banking. If you are interested in improving your long term net worth, then accept the short term cash flow adjustment. If you’re focused on the long term opportunity, be prepared to stop thinking about what you “woulda, coulda, shoulda” made if you were a banker. more rules...
