Cancer therapies developed at UM spun off to new companies

Two potential cancer therapies developed at the University of Miami have been licensed to startup companies under the umbrella of a Miami Beach-based venture capital firm.

Heat Biologics I and II are being funded and managed by Seed-One Ventures, which is led by managing partner Jeff Wolf, who will initially serve as CEO. He plans to locate the companies in the life science park UM has planned for its medical campus.

Seed-One, which has formed 10 life science companies, generally runs startups for two years, then brings in outside management and more investors, Wolf said.

"The whole mentality at UM is really changing," he said. "A few years ago, this wouldn't have been possible. But, given the push now for biomedical research and the new people who came to the university, there is a real push for this."
