Industry Rankings:
Surprisingly, the number two industry in terms of dollars spent is "Tourism", following just behind Aircraft, but ahead of the Oil industry, and the arms trade. People around the world spend at least one trillion dollars on travel each year. Travel and tourism comprise the world's largest industrial sector and employ over 300 million people, nearly one-tenth of the global work force.
On the other hand, how the industries are ranked in size depends upon the way that you rank and the definitions that you use. The largest in the world is the finance industry, which includes banking, insurance, and investments. However, when you break them out, insurance normally is the largest of those three. The problem is, how you decide to rank them. Do you rank them by revenues, assets, profits, etc. In overall asset size, insurance is the largest industry given the amount of money spent on insurance and the incredible amounts of reserves behind them as well. Do not forget about the medical industry. Depending upon how you break it out, or categorize it, the medical industry can also be considered the largest when you consider overall dollars spent on doctors, vitamins, supplements, pharmaceuticals, medicines, etc. There truly is no one answer because the definitions and categories are subjective.

Trends
Behind the industry analysis that you see here, there are fundamental underlying trends that are shaping our world today. Some of them such as the weakening of the US dollar are global in their impact. Others, such as the rise in oil prices, or shifts of farmers to plant corn for ethanol may impact certain industries globally, but not others at all. What business models are made possible by cheap air transportation, but will be made obsolete if oil prices rise?
