The Republic of Macedonia is currently making efforts to recover from ethnic related activities in 1999 which dealt a large blow to the national economy and put back the timescale for reforms and recovery of the national economy.
The Government of Macedonia is committed to establishing an open and export orientated market as a top priority. This is happening through changes in the financial, tax and customs systems. Reforms are also taking place within the public administration, education, social security and judicial systems. The country has also begun negotiations to enter the European Union. On this road towards a market economy, there are possibilities for overseas companies in the food, textiles, engineering, and paper products industries.
