Official Languages of the EU:

The European Union (EU) recognizes 23 official languages, in addition to which there are regional, minority languages, and languages spoken by migrant populations.[1]

 

 

Studying English:

"The highest shares of primary education pupils studying English were seen in Greece, Spain, Italy, Malta and Austria, where over nine out of every 10 children were studying English."

 

Turning to language learning in upper secondary education -- 

  1. English -- 83.5 % of all EU students at ISCED level 3 were studying English as a foreign language in 2007,
  2. French (21.8 %)
  3. German (22.5 %). [2]
