Debate:
Is Kosovo a country? Or, no?
note that --"Spain is one of only a handful of EU member states not to have recognised the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo over a year ago.
see Spain and regional autonomy issues
Where is Kosovo?
In the Balkans (used to be aligned with Russia)
Kosovo was apart of Yugoslavia, and as was Serbia = the heart of old Yugoslavia
Kosovo was the (Albanian) Muslims (who recently declared independence)
this caused the first major split in the European Union
as some nations were for and others were against.
- For: Countries with desire for independence were for (example: part of Georgia claimed independence also, and was supported by Russia)
- Against: Those fighting separatists were against (example: Spain who is opposed to Basque independence, and Romania opposed to Transylvania independence)
Without UN approval:
War in 1999:
NATO's air war on Kosovo and Serbia in 1999 was, like the Iraq war in 2003, conducted without the legal approval of the United Nations.
Declaration of independence:
recognition by many Western countries of Kosovo's independence from Serbia again lacked formal UN blessing (thanks to Russia's threatened veto).
