Slovakia

Slovakia is located in central Europe, at the crossroads of one of the world’s oldest trading routes, the east-west water route along the River Danube and the overland route from the Baltic to the Mediterranean.

The country has seen major increases in the level of its foreign direct investment over the past few years. Around half of all investment has been in the manufacturing sector within which automotive components, consumer electronics and precision engineering, represented the lion’s share. The country excels in mechanical and electrical engineering and has an information technology sector which represents one of the most powerful engines of economic growth. The software market in Central Europe is currently growing by around 30% annually.

Investors located in the region include Volkswagen, Lucus, Johnston Controls and Siemens.

Slovakia has a very well educated workforce. Since 1991, graduate output in Slovakia has increased by 40% to about 12,000 students per year of which 20% are I.T. related. The quality of graduate output has always been and still is consistently high - a fact underlined with Slovak students coming first in a 1997 Central and Eastern Europe programming contest sponsored by IBM. This helps to explain the significant increase in the number of international companies, like Siemens and Alcatel, undertaking software development activities in Slovakia.

Bratislava

Bratislava is the capital of the Slovak Republic and its most important city. Its strategic position on the commercial and cultural crossroads at the heart of the Central Danube region has contributed to the city´s development. Bratislava has a population of 450,000 and is the seat of the President, the Parliament, the Government, as well as a number of foreign embassies, prestigious universities, theatres and research facilities.

Of particular interest in the city is the SNP Square development. Preparatory project work began in April 1997 and the project, now at pre-investment phase, is being developed in cooperation with Bratislava Old Town District and other municipal authorities of the city.

Once completed the project will encompass a center for business and leisure, 800 underground parking lots, and 7,600 square metres of retail facilities. The estimated investment costs stand at EUR 50,208,000 with a planned construction time of 4 years. The land is owned by the city and the initiator of the project - Bratislava Old Town District - is now looking for an investor of the SNP Square development project.

Macro economic Profile 2008:

Slovakia, Poland & Czech Republic

Three countries have successfully withstood the current inflationary test—Slovakia, Poland, and the Czech Republic. Their present annual inflation is a moderate 4 to 7 percent, and their high growth rates continue. These countries all pursue inflation targeting, which means that their independent central banks focus on keeping inflation within a low target band, while maintaining tight monetary policy with positive real interest rates. Hence, their floating exchange rates have risen significantly in relation to the euro.
