Sweden

Geographically located in the center of Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea Region, Sweden offers links to the rest of Europe via road, rail and its international airports.

Sweden is a major European center of information technology. It is at the heart of ‘Wireless Valley’ – a region which includes Sweden’s North European neighbours, and is home to the world’s most advanced users of mobile telephony and the Internet. Wireless Valley has an enviable record of attracting world leaders in the development of communication technologies. Companies such as Nortel Networks, Intel, Microsoft, Nokia, Siemens, Motorola, Compaq, Cisco Systems and Oracle have established R&D centers in Sweden to develop new wireless applications. Other investors are Hewlett-Packard, Hüls, IBM and Unilever.

The skilled workforce for these investors is provided by the universities and research institutes. Sweden has the most advanced IT users in the world and this originates from the academic base, with technology forming a major part of skills development. Universities in Sweden include the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm; the Uppsala University; the Institute of Technology in Lund and Chalmers Institute of Technology in Göteborg. All working to ensure that Sweden maintains its position as a leader in the new economy.

East Sweden

East Sweden is located in the middle of what is developing to be one of the most dynamic regions in the world – north-eastern Europe. East Sweden, with the main cities of Linköping and Norrköping, is strategically located in south-eastern Sweden with easy access to the fast-growing Baltic market of more than 80 million people. Both Linköping and Norrköping have international airports located near their city centers.

East Sweden is characterized by a high-tech profile and active co-operation between large multinational companies, universities and small innovative companies. The modern interdisciplinary university (Linkoping University) with world-class education and research is one of the cornerstones in East Sweden’s positive development.

The region also has a long industrial tradition with high productivity and a highly qualified workforce with a good knowledge of foreign languages. Several international corporations have already discovered the benefits of investing in East Sweden. Whirlpool, Nokia, Ericsson, Convergys and Compaq are only a handful of examples. There are also a number of small and medium-sized companies such as Autoliv Electronics, ConNova, Aurora, a2b Electronics and Swedish Microwave.

Some of these investors are located on one of East Sweden’s three science parks. Mjärdevi Science Park is the biggest, and in fact, the fastest growing in Europe. The two others, Berzelius Science Park and ProNova, have considerable growth potential.

The Science Park was established in 1984 and has since grown to house 150 companies with around 5000 employees. It is one of the ten fastest growing science parks in the world.

The region benefits from the presence of Linkoping University; an institute with a focus on high-technology and leading edge research. Particular areas of expertise include medical technology, industrial management and engineering, materials technology and IT. The university has the country's broadest curriculum of IT courses and Sweden's largest department for computer science.

Helsingborg

Helsingborg has since long been a centre for transport and trade. The transport industry still employs many people and Helsingborg's Harbour (Helsingborgs Hamn) is the second largest in the country. However, it is above all the IT-industry that is expanding today. A number of the country's best known computer companies - for example, ReadSoft and Mactive - have their head offices in Helsingborg and Ikea has moved its international IT-centre here! It is also within IT and other high-tech branches that the greatest need for employees will be found in the future.

Once upon a time, a rubber boot was Helsingborg's industrial symbol! During the first half of the 20th century, the production industry played a large and important role in the development of the town. This position has now been taken over by companies dealing with logistics, chemicals, medicine and food-production. Well-known Helsingborg companies are Scandlines, Kemira Kemi, Pharmacia, van den Bergh Food/Unilever and Ikea.
